Sherene Shalhub, MD MPH DFSVS FACS is a vascular surgeon-scientist and the John Porter M.D. Endowed Professor and Division Head of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).. Additionally, she serves as the Vice Chair for Regional Strategy and Surgical Operations, Executive Director of the OHSU Northwest Genetic Aortopathy & Arteriopathy Program (NW GAAP), Co-Director of the OHSU Heart and Vascular Service Line, and Associate Director of the Knight Cardiovascular Institute.
Dr. Shalhub earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida, where she also obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology. She completed her General Surgery residency and Vascular Surgery fellowship at the University of Washington, where she later served as faculty before joining OHSU. Dr. Shalhub is board-certified in Vascular Surgery and holds medical licenses in multiple states. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Distinguished Fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery (DFSVS). In addition to her clinical and research contributions, she is an esteemed lecturer and thought leader, frequently invited to present at major surgical conferences.
Her research focuses on the natural history of aortic dissection and aneurysm formation, genetic aortopathies, and patient engagement in research. She has secured grant funding from the NIH, PCORI, The Ehlers-Danlos Society, and other organizations to advance research in these areas. She has also led multicenter collaborations aimed at improving outcomes for patients with genetic aortic and arterial diseases. As a leading expert in vascular surgery, Dr. Shalhub has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, with significant contributions to the understanding of genetic aortic disease. She is actively involved in shaping the future of vascular surgery through her leadership roles in national and international vascular societies, her mentorship of trainees, and her advocacy for a paradigm shift in the treatment of aortic disease.
With her work in genetic aortopathy and aortic disease management, Dr. Shalhub continues to advance the integration of genetic insights into vascular surgical practice.
